THE ASSAM MOUNTAINEERING ASSOCIATION, the pioneer organization of its kind in the region was established in the year 1968 by a few enthusiastic persons, who envisaged creating and fostering amongst the youths a spirit of adventure, team work, to develop capacity of ready and positive responses to challenging situation and of both physical and mental endurance. Since then this premier organization of the North-East has done an yeomen’s service to achieve its objectives in the direction. The Assam Mountaineering Association has contemplated to organize an adventure oriented programme, wherein the youths (12 to 35 year) will be a first knowledge on various skills required for climbing a mountain. Some of the integral techniques such as rock climbing, rappelling or abseiling (descending from a steep cliff) chimney climbing, belaying a fellow climber, crossing a turbulent stream, trekking in a group, use and care of mountaineering equipments etc. will be taught to the trainees by the experienced mountaineers of the Assam mountaineering association.
Vision
The aim of the proposal for setting up of mountaineering & adventure sports institutes in Assam and other states of North Eastern Region is to establish a system to harness the energy and utilize the potential of youth for constructive and productive purpose on urgent basis by innovative adventure based multi skill development programmes linked with employment so as to avoid the occurrence of undesirable, unsocial and anti-national activities by the youth.
Objective of the course
The objectives of the courses is to provide a firsthand mountaineering training especially on Rock, as well as to encourage the youth of the North-East region to these adventurous sports and stimulate among them the spirit of adventure, to reveal and develop the sturdier qualities of character, both physical and mental, to instill a sense of comradeship, discipline, selflessness, self reliance, physical fitness and the ability to think and live adventurously.

Basics of Disaster Management Training limited to Search, Rescue and Evacuation of casualties are integral part of specially structured adventure activities based on the local natural resources and have the following benefits:

Our assets
R. K. Bhuyan Memorial Rock Field: As a tribute to Late Rohini Kr. Bhuyan, the father of mountaineering in Assam, the rock field within the Assam State Zoo has been formally named after the pioneer adventure and today it is one of the important responsibilities of the Assam Mountaineering Association to take proper care of this rock field which trains many climbers from the North East.
Madhuryya Bhawan: The permanent office of the Association in RGB Sports Complex, Guwahati was donated by Late Madhuryya Mahanta’s friends and relatives in April 2001, and was inaugurated by Shri Prafulla Kr. Mahanta, the then Chief Minister of Assam.
R. K. Bhuyan Memorial Equipment Store: with an objective to curtail the huge expenditure incurred by mountaineers of the region for hiring mountaineering equipments form outside, the association approached the North Eastern Council for finical assistance to set up our own central equipment store and with its support the R. K. Bhuyan Memorial Equipment Store was formally inaugurated in October 1993 by Late Hiteswar Saikia, the then Chief Minister of Assam.
